What is agestats.ie?
Agestats.ie is a website that provides an overview of selected datasets on ageing in Northern Ireland (NI) and the Republic of Ireland (RoI).
Who should use agestats.ie?
It is designed to be used by researchers who are engaged in comparative research on ageing.
It may also be of interest to anyone working in the ageing sector who is interested in finding out about data on key issues relating to ageing and older people in NI and ROI.
What can I find on agestats.ie?
The website provides a summary of 50 selected surveys (27 NI; 23 ROI) relating to ageing, organised into nine themes:
- Economic and material
- Education and training
- Employment and work
- Family, social networks, support and participation
- Health and wellbeing
- Living environment
- Political and civic
- Values, attitudes and opinions

How can I search for data sources?
There are 3 ways you can search on agestats.ie:
- Quick search
- Advanced search
- Multiple theme search
1. Quick search
From the homepage, it is possible to search through the data sources using a quick search by keyword, e.g. poverty, education, health. To do this, enter the keyword in the “Quick search” box, select Northern Ireland or Republic of Ireland or Both and click the “Do search” button.
The quick search presents a list of all relevant surveys in the database with accompanying information. More details and a link to the original survey data can be obtained by clicking on any of the selected surveys. This will allow you to view full information on the survey selected, including the sample size and what themes the survey covers, survey dates and the last year the data is publicly available. There is also an external link to the original survey
2. Advanced search
The advanced search is an easy way to filter down the amount of surveys that you want returned. The search filters are all combined so that it only returns the surveys that match all the criteria you have chosen. In addition to selecting the jurisdiction, users can also select the groups of older people that can be compared across the data and further filter searches by main theme, sub theme and measure.
3. Multiple theme search
The advanced search also allows users to search across multiple themes, sub-themes and measures from a single query. Full instructions on how to use the search functions are available here
